Get involved Volunteering Volunteering Celebrating Volunteers Celebrating Volunteers At Surrey Clubs for Young People (SCYP) thousands of volunteers have played a huge part of the organisation from its inception over 74 years ago right up until today. Every year SCYP honours its volunteers at its annual awards ceremony, but with the ceremony on hold for the time being, we are still celebrating what volunteers bring to their communities and to our charity. We have a lot to celebrate and are proud to have these amazing people be part of SCYP. It is without doubt that through volunteers giving their time and enthusiasm our volunteers have given young people across Surrey amazing role models, life skills, support and a sense of belonging and empowerment. From our own Trustees to volunteers out in the community in youth clubs, SCYP is the successful and vibrant charity it is today because of our close work with volunteers throughout our history. In May 2021 at the Epsom Youth and Community Centre, The Edge, Jan Mason and Serena Powis were given Community Champion Awards by Surrey High Sherriff Dr. Julie Llewelyn. Jan is a Councillor and a leading member of the Epsom and Ewell Local Committee. She is also on the council’s Communities Select Committee which looks at issues including libraries, the fire service and working with the voluntary sector, among others. Jan has been an active member of her community for many years and is a huge supporter of The Edge Youth & Community Centre and is greatly committed to the youth club’s ongoing success. We’re proud to say that Serena is a SCYP trustee of 5 years as well as the Community and Voluntary Sector Liaison Officer at Epsom and Ewell Council and an extremely keen motorcycle enthusiast. “I have always considered myself as a bit of a “Doing” person and am prepared to step forward to take on a task if I feel I can bring my skills to the table. This is probably why I have been appointed as a Trustee and Board member on a number of local Charities.” Serena used to run the Stephen Woods Youth Centre in Epsom and continues to be committed to youth work in the area. She is a key community link working with a wide variety of organisations across Epsom, and is active in all aspects of community life and is a trustee of many local organisations.
