One of the main things I liked about boxing as a sport is that no one seems to have an attitude that they are better than anyone else…every time I go to the club I walk away with something new under my belt."

Spotlight on Woking ABC and the 2019 County Rounds

Woking ABC young boxers put up a brave fight at the National Association for Boys & Girls Clubs County Rounds Championships held earlier this month in Twickenham.

Unfortunately, the competing young men didn’t make it through to their next bouts but their determination and the skills imparted by the club were on full show. Felix Ayling, whose injury proved to be the end of his bout, and Awais Hussain, are both members of Woking Amateur Boxing Club. The club has been in existence from at least the late 1920’s, probably makes it the oldest club in Surrey.

The club has a great history and operates a safe and professional environment, all coaches are DBS checked, first aid and safeguarding educated and the club is affiliated to both to the England Boxing governing body and Surrey Clubs for Young People. The club has a strong association with the Army and is also a member of the Police Community Clubs of Great Britain.

The club caters for ages 9 and upwards and runs sessions throughout the week, including its really popular Saturday morning sessions designed to get young people into the positive environment of the club rather than leaving them unfocussed, vulnerable and at risk.

Dave Oliver, who as a young man boxed at the club and is now a volunteer coach with over 40 years of coaching and club experience and says:

"Our Saturday morning 'Get off the Streets' session is a huge success with about 40 young people spending Saturday mornings. They keep fit, learning discipline in a sport, support each other, making friend's and have a positive focus for their time. We have shown great success in giving young people in the local community a healthy and disciplined pastime.”

The club currently has fourteen unpaid volunteers who are passionate about boxing and giving young people the guidance they need to excel in the sport. But it welcomes anyone who would like to volunteer to support this community gem and invites them to get in touch.
